Astronauts spend months living in space, where they eat, sleep, work, exercise, and even play games. This raises a simple yet intriguing question: do they wash their clothes?

Until a few years ago, space missions lasted only a few days, so astronauts could simply change outfits without worrying about washing them. However, with missions now extending from three to eight months, how do they manage without laundry facilities?

Why Can’t Astronauts Wash Clothes In Space?

The reality is that astronauts’ clothes wear out quickly due to the conditions in space. The simplest solution has been for astronauts to carry enough clothing for their entire mission, which is what they have been doing until now. Even if washing clothes were possible, water is scarce in space. Every drop of water used for drinking must be recycled, making laundry an impractical task.

Even though astronauts spend extended periods in space, clothes are still not washed aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Instead, they bring a stockpile of clothing with their cargo and change into fresh outfits as needed. Additional supplies, including clothes, arrive periodically via cargo resupply missions.

How Long Can Clothes Last In Space?

Astronauts wear their clothes for several days or even weeks. Unlike on Earth, there is no dust in space, so clothes do not get dirty as frequently. The ISS also maintains a controlled temperature, reducing the need for frequent changes.

    Do Astronauts Sweat In Space?

Although astronauts exert less energy in microgravity, they still need to exercise extensively to maintain their health. This intense physical activity causes sweating, making their clothes dirty over time. As a result, while outfits last longer than on Earth, they cannot be worn indefinitely.

    What Happens To Used Clothes?

Once an astronaut’s clothes become too soiled to wear, they are discarded. Used garments either return to Earth for washing and potential reuse or are packed into cargo vehicles and burned upon re-entering Earth’s atmosphere.

With several future missions planned for Mars, carrying excessive amounts of clothing would add unnecessary weight to spacecraft. Therefore, scientists must find a way to wash clothes efficiently in space – without using large amounts of water.

In 2023, a special detergent called Tide Infinity was developed, designed to wash clothes with half the usual amount of water. However, NASA has yet to implement it.

Researchers are also working on a washer-dryer combination that could function on the Moon and Mars. This technology could also be beneficial in arid regions on Earth.
